Frequently Asked Questions about NAET (FAQs)

What are allergies?
Allergies are understood to be an unusual sensitivity to certain substances. Although the term "Allergy" has been widely used in the medical profession and the public sphere for decades, knowledge about the nature of allergies and their implications is still in its infancy. Many people continue to think of allergies simply as a limited group of symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, hives and asthma or hay fever. Fortunately, increasing numbers of health professionals are beginning to recognize allergic reactions as factors in most illnesses and disorders.

How does a person or animal develop allergies to a substance?
An allergy may result from numerous causes, including exposure to a particularly strong or toxic substance over a period of time. Repeated exposure to even a mild substance may exhaust the body's immune defenses to resist that substance or situation’s effects on the body. An allergic reaction may also result from events such as trauma, major surgery, an anesthetic event, vaccinations, as well as emotional stresses such as change in habitat, weaning, or change in family members (human or animal).

What are hidden allergies?
Hidden or chronic allergies can cause severe developmental and functional problems, deficiencies, or chemical imbalances. For example, an allergy to B vitamins can cause B vitamin deficiencies and result in chronic health problems such as chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms, illness m.e., autism, ADHD, chronic asthma, fibromyalgia, digestive disturbances, psoriasis, eczema, depression, and headaches. An allergic response to calcium can cause joint or arthritic problems. When vitamin B or calcium are cleared, the body can begin assimilating these crucial nutrients for the first time, and quickly replenish the depleted stores to restore good health.

How does the immune system respond to allergic substances?
The body may respond with any of a variety of symptoms that may worsen at certain times of the year, as in the case of pollen allergies. Symptoms may also be more acute at certain locations or under certain situations when greater amounts of the offending substance are encountered. These symptoms often are not recognized as a reaction to a substance, but rather are viewed as common medical conditions requiring drugs to treat/mask the symptom. Click Conditions

What are traditional Western diagnostic tests for allergies?
Currently, conventional allopathic (Western/AMA) medicine has several methods for diagnosing allergies including intradermal tests, patch tests, scratch tests and various blood tests such as the RAST and the ELIZA.

What are conventional medical treatments for allergies?
The standard or conventional allopathic medical treatment for allergies involves taking drugs such as antihistamines or steroids, orally or by injection, that control the symptoms and often have serious long-term side effects. Often, the standard Western medical recommendation is to completely avoid the offending substance. This protocol can be difficult and, in some cases, impossible for the sufferer due to the pervasiveness of the substance or situation in the person’s life.

How does NAET differ from allopathic medical treatment?
NAET provides an alternative to conventional, allopathic treatment of symptoms through the application of ancient oriental practices and protocols to first identify and then desensitize the immune system and the body’s reaction to the substance.

What substances are treated first?
Usually the Basic 15 are treated first. These consist of essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals and those substances that are needed for normal physical, physiological and emotional functions of the body, as well as those needed to maintain a healthy immune system. This builds a strong foundation for later treatments. When you try to treat an severe allergy without strengthening the immune system first, reactions to the treatment can be very unpleasant. With a weak immune system, the energy flow may be slow and it may take more treatments to clear the allergen.

What treatments to do after the Basics?
After the Basics, treatments can be done for allergic reactions to chemicals, environmental allergens, vaccinations, immunizations, etc. in the order of priority for the body to most effectively heal.

How do I prepare for receiving a treatment?
No preparation is necessary other than desire to feel better.

What is the protocal or what happens during a treatment?
The client rests on a massage table and holds small vials of various substances suspected to be causing the allergic reaction. The practitioner muscle tests to determine the appropriate substance that is causing the reaction. When the correct one is identified the practitioner uses acupressure to stimulate the meridian systems along the spine to re-imprint the brain's recognition of the substance as non-allergenic.

How long does a treatment take?
Treatments usually take between 30 minutes and an hour.

What do I need to do after a treatment?
If possible, the client must completely avoid the substance for twenty-five hours following the treatment. If avoidance isn’t possible, then repeat treatments can be done hourly to reinforce the initial treatment. Sometimes the client can do these treatments for themselves (self-treatments).

Are there any after-effects to a treatment?
Sometimes a detox healing reaction occurs that increases the symptoms for a short time. This is referred to as a healing crisis. It can be uncomfortable, but is a cause for celebration, as it is an indication that the treatment is shifting the allergic response out of the body.
